SIKESTON, MO (KAIT) - The Sikeston Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened early Christmas morning, leaving a 32-year-old man in critical condition.
According to a press release from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, police got a call of shots fired as people were leaving a party in the 200-block of West Malone around 1:50 a.m.
Officers were already in the area monitoring the party and heard several shots.
Several people left the area before police could set up a perimeter to hold the witnesses.
A short time later, the Missouri Delta Medical Center contacted police about the man showing up to the emergency room with multiple gunshot wounds.
The unidentified Cape Girardeau man was the only victim, according to the press release, and he had three gunshot wounds in the torso.
The man told police he was leaving the party when he was shot by an unknown person.
He was later taken to the St. Francis Medical Center and then transferred to a St. Louis hospital.
He is in critical condition now. Police said "his outcome is not certain at this time."
The press release states the SEMO Major Case Squad was activated and worked most of Christmas Day interviewing witnesses and looking over evidence.
The Sikeston Department of Public Safety is now asking for help with the investigation. They are asking that any witness that has not come forward yet to do so.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sikeston police at 573-471-4711.
