Brookland Elementary School teacher Shelly Jones was selected as our December Teacher of the Month.
Jones, an Arkansas State University graduate and Pocahontas native, has been teaching for 10 years at Brookland.
Jones always knew she wanted to be a teacher.
"Being around children always came easy to me," Jones said. "As my youngest came to age to start school, I really started to evaluate what I was doing and what I wanted to do with my life and I decided going back to school was a good idea and then I saw the teaching program and it just made sense. I'm really thankful that I did because I love this job, I wouldn't want to do anything else."
Despite being advised to teach children in middle school, Jones knew working with younger children was her calling.
"There's so much wonder with them and you can do a lot more things with little ones that you might not be able to do with older children," Jones said. "A lot of the time, they have these a-ha moments that you don't get with a lot of the older ones."
Jones has a close-knit relationship with her students and said she tries various approaches making sure the lesson reaches each child.
"I try to get every child to understand that they are an individual," Jones said. "They're their own person and they learn in their own way."
Jones said her students are her favorite thing about teaching and credits them with being the reason she gets up every morning.
