BAY, AR (KAIT) - -

A family of five, who lost their home the week before Christmas, are now victims of theft, authorities said Wednesday.

The fire happened early Monday morning, on Craighead 691 in Bay.

However, when the Sawyer family arrived back on the scene, Lauren Sawyer said they found several things stolen at night; most belonging to her husband.

“We have had some theft several nights in a row since the fire," she said. “So, all of his tools that were in his shop were taken. The 4-wheeler was taken the next night or the third night. Just pilfering now, there’s nothing of value really left here, but there just…I don’t know what they’re looking for.”

Lauren says the family stayed at their in-laws for a few nights after the fire. Now the family lives in an RV on the property.

Jacob Sawyer said they hope people will stop stealing their stuff now that they are around…

“Unfortunately there are a few people apparently, who take advantage of a situation like this," he said. "We had around 10,000 worth of tools an ATV stolen. I try my best to focus on everyone who helped us instead of the very few who hurt us.”

Jacob Sawyer also said his family owes so much to the community, who didn’t hesitate to give back by helping them clean up, donating money and sending gift cards.

“We love living out here in the farm and sometimes we forget that we are part of a community and people who are helping us are speaking nothing in return," he said.

After cleanup, the Sawyer family says they plan to rebuild and start over with a new house on the same property.

A police report has been filed, but the suspects have not yet been identified.
