LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT/KATV) -

In light of recent celebrity deaths, an Arkansas doctor urges others to monitor their own heart health to avoid heart disease.

According to Little Rock ABC-affiliate KATV, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Dr. Andre Paixao, an interventional cardiologist at Arkansas Heart Hospital said that statistic should not be a surprise.

“That's a lot,” Paixao said. “It's a lot more than cancer, lung disease, kidney disease - and unfortunately Arkansas is among the top five states with the worst rate of cardiovascular deaths in the country.”

Although many people are genetically pre-disposed, Paixao says habits like poor diets and smoking put people at a higher risk.
