MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Dozens of Mid-South animals received a second chance at life.

Wagging tails took to the skies as part of an effort to find forever homes for several furry friends.

"The south has so many strays--has so many unwanted pets," Trent Stacy with West Memphis Animal Shelter said.

That is the reason why Wings of Rescue said it flew more than 100 dogs and cats from multiple shelters and groups in the Mid-South to no kill shelters in the pacific northwest.

Once the animals reach their destination, Wings of Rescue said they are typically adopted in about three days.

"We've been doing it on the west coast for seven years. This is our very first flight out of Memphis," Yehuda Netanel, founder of Wings of Rescue, said.

It's the first flight out of Memphis because Netanel recently relocated to Lakeland for his real estate career.

Once here, he and his team said they were shocked at the number of strays and animals killed in the area.

"He's just like 'There's a need here; we need to come,'" Ric Browde of Wings of Rescue said.

According to Netanel, approximately 120 animals were on the cross-country flight--including 30 cats.

The organization spent more than $18,000 to fly the animals to a chance at their forever home.

Because of the high cost to fly the animals to no kill shelters, the organization said it will need to depend on the community to make this work the next time.

"These people are nice enough to get these planes to come here, but there are a lot of costs involved," Stacy said.

The next flight is planned for Valentine's Day and organizers are hoping people will find a place in their heart for a new pet.
