NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - The city of Newport is helping residents get back to normal after storms swept through town Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Mayor David Stewart said city hall received between 30 to 40 calls about damage, but the police department received more calls than that.

The Red Cross has been contacted asking for their help to assist residents who lost power or had damage to their homes.

The damage was so bad that people have had a hard time getting out of their driveways because of the debris left behind after the storms.

"At least two cases where trees had blown on the house and one on the door, and they weren't able to get out of their home," Stewart said. "We had crews out early on and were able to move those trees and debris so people could try to get their lives back to normal."

City trucks were sent through town on Thursday picking up debris. Debris sites have been set up so trucks can unload what they pick up.
