BONO, AR (KAIT) - The city of Bono is looking to add a new park off of College Street that will provide a space for residents during severe weather.

Mayor Danny Shaw said the city bought 18 acres of land to build an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant playground, a baseball field, picnic tables and a pavilion.

He also wants to build a safe room that residents could use to take shelter in during severe weather.

The city needs a grant from the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism to build the safe room.

"Some of the residents have storm cellars but others have to hunker down and hang on, and we don't want them to have to live like that," Shaw said. "We want them to have a place to go and feel safe."

Shaw said if the city cannot put the safe room in the new park, then he plans to build it on the corner of the Bono Fire Station.

The park will cost around $400,000. He hopes to have it completed by the summer.
