WEST MEMPHIS, AR (KAIT) -

A West Memphis man will spend 3 decades in prison for murder.

According to a news release from Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington, 39-year-old Lester Ray Thomas pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

According to Ellington, Thomas killed Robert Barrentine at a home on Balfour Street in West Memphis in August 2016.

Thomas was sentenced on Wednesday to 30 years in prison.

Ellington said Thomas will not be eligible for parole because of his criminal record.

“We consulted with the victim's family and this plea removes this violent individual from our community, spares the victim's family from years of appeal proceedings that would occur after the jury trial and the family agreed that this plea and sentence, without the eligibility of parole, was in their best interests and the interests of justice,” Ellington said in the news release.
