NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -

Entergy Arkansas took to the skies Friday morning to help keep Region 8 residents safe.

Entergy partnered with North Carolina-based helicopter company Aerial Solutions to tackle tree trimming in Newport.

Entergy Transmission Operation Coordinator Lance Schumacher said they bring in the air saw about 6-8 weeks out of the year and have been utilizing this option rather than groundwork for the past 20 years.

“We use it in extreme cases,” Schumacher said. “Mainly in swamp areas that are inaccessible by any other means that we have and getting the reliability up.”

Schumacher said the air saw is cost-effective as it can cover a larger area in less time to ensure the limbs of the trees don’t grow over Entergy’s easements.

“Reliability hands down,” Schumacher said. “Trees are the number one cause of outages on the Entergy system and this is just one of the major means we can use to prevent that.”
