PIGGOTT, AR (KAIT) - Special Olympics Arkansas held a basketball skills event in Piggott on Friday.

The event was held in the Piggott High School gym, and athletes from across Region 8 attended.

Contests for shooting, dribbling and passing took place during the event.

The Area 1 basketball team also played a scrimmage game during the event.

"Piggott has hosted it now for probably for the last 12 years," said Skip Schalk, the Area 1 training director.  "It's pretty big. We have almost 400 athletes that participate with us in Area 1."

The event concluded with area law enforcement members handing out medals to the athletes.

"At every event we do we try to get our local law enforcement to be apart of our special day," said Schalk.  "These athletes love policeman and firemen."

He said he is proud to be apart of such a wonderful organization.

"If you've never been involved with Special Olympics, you need to be because you get a blessing out of it," he said.
