Man's charges upgraded after child dies in shooting

BEEBE, AR (KAIT) - A seven-year-old child recently injured in an accidental shooting died Saturday at a Little Rock hospital. The person arrested is now facing an upgraded charge.

According to a report from Little Rock television station KARK, Karma Wezowicz passed away about 12:50 p.m. Saturday at Arkansas Children's Hospital. The child was critically injured in a shooting Monday night and was on life support.

The child's father, Matthew Wezowicz, told KARK that a friend, Jeremiah Owens, came to his house to check on him and the child. Owens was looking at a gun Wezowicz had recently bought but the gun went off, and the child was shot.

Owens was arrested and taken to the White County Detention Center.

The 26-year-old's charges have been upgraded to felony manslaughter, according to the Beebe Police Department. He was initially charged with first-degree battery.

Bond was set at $50,000 and his first court appearance is scheduled for April 4 at 9 a.m.

The family has seen its share of tragedy in recent months. KARK reported that Wezowicz's wife, Renata, passed away earlier this year from sickle cell anemia.
