Authorities investigate officer involved shooting in New Madrid County

NEW MADRID CO., MO (KAIT) - - According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Sikeston area Monday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper tried to pull over a vehicle on U.S. 60 around 12:40 p.m. Monday for a registration violation. The vehicle turned onto Keystone Drive and a short pursuit ensued.

The vehicle slid off the road, hitting a utility pole guy wire, authorities said, noting the front seat passenger fled the scene on foot but was taken into custody.

However, the rear seat passenger, whose name was not released, got out of the vehicle and fired several shots at the trooper, fleeing on foot.

"The trooper returned fire," the press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. "The rear passenger was later taken into custody by officers from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety. The driver placed the vehicle into reverse and fled the scene."

The driver, whose name was not released, was later found near I-55 and was arrested, police said.

According to Sgt. Clark Parrott, no one was injured.
