KENNETT, MO (KAIT) -

A Kennett non-profit organization is working to stand true to its name as the organization is working to bring hope to families recently impacted by severe weather.

Hope International is helping Bernie, Missouri families get back on their feet after last weeks storms rolled through the Missouri Bootheel.

Bernie was hit, and it was very unexpected, you know, the actual disaster part that did happen, Hope International manager, Kristen Stevens said.

The group went out the night of the storms and helped pick up debris left behind.

There are a lot of trees down, roofs were stripped off, and one lady, her house just split in two, Stevens said. People werent able to get out of their driveways and some of them werent able to go get help for themselves.

The local elementary school sustained damage, leaving four classrooms destroyed.

We got the crew together, we got the chainsaws that we had, the rakes just to make the streets accessible, she said. We spent a lot of time at the school cutting up trees and hauling that off for them to where the school was accessible for the kids and the parents.

After the cleanup efforts, some families are still left without homes and damage.

On Tuesday, Hope International volunteers spent time in their warehouse sorting through donated items, hoping Bernie families can benefit from them.

We had a bunch of tarps that someone gave to us, so we were able to staple that on a womans roof to hopefully save her furniture, Stevens said.

The organization has a warehouse full of donated furniture, bedding, toiletry items, clothes, and food.

Stevens said they help families worldwide. Anyone needing help from storm damage or other circumstances can call the organization for more information at 573-888-8966.
