JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A smoothie criminal broke into a Hilltop restaurant early Wednesday morning and stole the safe.

The manager of Tropical Smoothie Café, 3410 E. Johnson, discovered the break-in around 6:30 a.m. when he arrived at the store to open it.

According to the initial incident report, someone shattered the front glass door and stole the safe from the office.

The manager estimated the safe contained as much as $1,554 cash from the previous two days’ receipts.

He told the responding officer he received a text alert at 2:10 a.m. about an alarm at the store. But, because the alarm had never gone off before and authorities did not contact him, he did not respond.

Police searched the store but did not find any cut wires or damage to the security system.

The restaurant’s owner, who was in Little Rock, told police by phone that there had been a “recent rash of burglaries at other Tropical Smoothies in that area with the same MO (door shattered/safe stolen),” the report stated.

The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division.
