1 killed, 1 seriously injured in crash near Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) -

A Wednesday morning crash sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries. One person was pronounced dead hours later.

The crash happened just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of Missouri State Highway 53 and Butler County Road 306, one mile south of Poplar Bluff.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, Joseph B. Hawkins, 39, of Portageville turned his 2015 Chevy pickup truck into the path of a 1997 Pontiac van driven by Kenneth D. Hughes, 40, of Poplar Bluff.

A helicopter flew Hughes to Regional One Health in Memphis, TN with serious injuries.

His passenger, 59-year-old Leanna F. Eastwood of Poplar Bluff was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center with unspecified serious injuries.

Eastwood was pronounced dead at the same hospital just after 2 p.m., according to the crash report.

Investigators said neither Eastwood nor Hughes was wearing a seat belt.

Both vehicles were totaled.
