Street department addresses debris issue

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The weather is definitely moving toward spring, and people have been working in their yards.

However, blowing leaves into nearby streets can cause drains to clog when rain moves into the area.

Several Jonesboro residents have told Region 8 News that their neighbors have been doing this. City street department workers have been working this week to clear drains to avoid flood problems. However, crews have said that people bagging leaves will help avoid the issue altogether.

Sunni Booker, who lives in a flood zone area, said the drainage issue has been difficult for residents to deal with.

"When all this water drains off - if these ditches on the other side of the road aren't cleaned out. Or, really the bigger issue is there isn't anywhere for this water to go when it comes across the street because it's coming at such a rapid pace. It continues to back up in our yard," Booker said.

Booker said she believes the work must be done city-wide and that each person needs to work to alleviate the problem.

City street officials told Region 8 News that it is also illegal for people to burn leaves in ditches. The burning can cause drains to back up as well.
