Sports - Harding Bison
CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix rallied from an early four-run deficit and scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 7-4 victory over the Harding baseball team Wednesday in non-conference action at Warrior Field.
Harding (4-13) took the lead in the second inning. Chris Taylor tripled to right center and scored on J. Paul Fullerton's sacrifice fly. The Bisons plated three more in the third with Taylor driving in two with a single and Zac Beasley scoring Brooks Pitaniello from third on a ground out.
Bison starter Jackson Ward blanked the Warriors on four hits over three innings.
Hendrix (4-9) got its bats going in the fourth, scoring five times. Harding reliever Nash Thomas (0-2) retired the first batter he faced, but the next five reached base on two walks, two infield singles and a double. All five scored to give the Warriors a 5-4 lead.
Harding had all seven of its hits in the first four innings but had base runners in each of the last five. The Bisons drew eight walks and a hit-by-pitch over the last five innings but did not score.
Hendrix, a Division III member of the Southern Athletic Association, added a pair of runs on three hits in the eighth.
The Warriors used eight pitchers with freshman left-hander Josh Gonzales (1-0) collecting the win by pitching a scoreless fourth inning. Five pitchers later Taylor Barker earned the save, his first.
Taylor and fellow junior Grant Guest each had two hits for the Bisons. It was Guest's team-leading sixth multi-hit game and the fourth for Taylor.
Harding is back in action Sunday and Monday in Great American Conference action against Ouachita Baptist. The Bisons and Tigers will play a single, nine-inning game Sunday at 3 p.m. and a Monday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. All three games are at Harding's Jerry Moore Field.
