JONESBORO, Ark. (3/9/17) – Arkansas State junior Justin Felix has been placed on the watch list for the 2017 Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation’s top catcher, as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission Thursday afternoon.
A native of Nogales, Ariz., Felix is one of 85 Division I backstops to be named to the watch list for the award. The list will continue to be updated through May 1 before semifinalists will be announced May 17. The finalists will be announced June 5, 2017. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29, 2017.
Felix has started his A-State career very strongly with a .333 batting average, .440 on-base percentage, and .643 slugging percentage, all of which lead the team in each respective category. He’s hit seven doubles and also slugged a pair of homers along with driving in a team-high 16 runs. Additionally, he’s thrown out three runners attempting to steal and has picked off another.
Arkansas State is set to take on No. 24 Louisiana Tech Friday, March 10 in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The Red Wolves and Bulldogs will attempt to play the series finale Saturday at 6 p.m.
