State rep. to give update on civil rights museum plans

HOXIE, AR (KAIT) - Plans are in the works to open a civil rights museum in Hoxie.

On March 13, Representative Frances Cavanaugh from Walnut Ridge will host a news conference in the State Capitol rotunda to discuss the ongoing efforts to open the Hoxie Civil Rights Museum.

The museum will also include an education center to share the historical significance of the integration.

Just one year after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision, the Hoxie School Board voted to integrate the school district.

Following a publication in LIFE magazine about the success of the integration, protests erupted as well as threats and calls to boycott the school.

A display about the 1955 integration will also be highlighted at the Capitol Monday morning.
