Man stole bartender's tips after he was refused a beer, police say

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - When he couldn't buy a pitcher of beer with a check, police say a man reached into the bartender's tip jar and stole the money.

The alleged theft occurred around 11 p.m. Friday night at Sully's, 1700 S. Caraway.

The bartender said a man wearing a camo jacket, blue jeans, and a baseball cap came into the bar and tried to buy a pitcher of beer with a check.

When she told him that the restaurant did not accept checks, she said the man reached into the tip jar sitting on the bar and stole money from it.

After grabbing the cash, the man left out the front door.

A short time later, two officers stopped a man matching the suspect's description on a bicycle at the intersection of Highland Drive and Caraway Road.

According to Officer Anthony Zaffarano, the man matched the person seen on the restaurant's surveillance video. The victim also positively identified him as the individual who took the tips.

Zaffarano searched the man, identified as 37-year-old Christopher Ray Shaver of Jonesboro, and found a $5 bill on him.

Zaffarano arrested Shaver and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center where he was cited for theft of property and left on a $770 surety bond to await a probable cause hearing.
