Woman assaulted as she held her baby, police say

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - A man faces domestic battery and child endangerment charges after he hit a woman in the head with his fist as she held her newborn baby, Blytheville police said Monday.

Patrick Newbern Jr. of Blytheville was arrested on suspicion of third-degree domestic battery, endangering the welfare of a minor and resisting arrest after police went to an apartment in the 800-block of E. Main Street about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to Captain Scott Adams with Blytheville police, the victim told police she and Newbern had a verbal altercation that led to the attack.

"The victim stated that Newbern Jr. began striking her in the head with a closed fist while she was holding her newborn baby in her arms," the report said. "The victim stated that she fled across to Pizza Hut parking lot to get help."

A witness, who was at the home when the incident happened, told police she was attacked as well.

"She stated that while she was trying to interfere between the two, Newbern struck her in her back with a bottle," the report noted.

Police also found a bag of marijuana at the scene and logged it into evidence, Adams said.
