Nation facing pilot shortage

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An opportunity to learn to fly as a pilot can be rewarding with one local flight instructor saying there is a definite need for the specialized field.

Kirby Wagner, a flight instructor at C & S Aviation in Jonesboro, said Monday that many pilots are retiring with major airlines. The retirements have put pressure on regional carriers, creating a pilot shortage.

People are traveling by air more nowadays, with demand for pilots great, Wagner said, noting it is a good career choice for younger people with training at an all time high.

"A lot more people are feeding into the airlines faster... so that helps- as long as you can do the training; build up the flight time. It's fairly easy to go under the airlines," Wagner said.

It costs around $7,000 to attend flight school, Wagner said.

Anyone interested in becoming a pilot can call the school at (870) 935-3880.
