JONESBORO, AR -  Jonesboro Police Department Corporal Heidi Thompson died unexpectedly this morning at a Jonesboro hospital.

According to the Jonesboro 911 Dispatch Center, a call was placed from Thompson's home just before 8 a.m. requesting medical assistance.  A paramedic team arrived a short time later and found her unresponsive.  Efforts were made to resuscitate her before she was then taken by ambulance to St. Bernard's Medical Center, where further efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

"The Jonesboro Police Department is saddened by the loss of Officer Heidi Thompson," said JPD public information officer Steve McDaniel.  "She was a dedicated police officer and was a highly respected School Resource Officer where she was well loved by the school children and staff.  She will be greatly missed."  Thompson served as the Resource Officer at Philadelphia Elementary in north Jonesboro.  School principal Paul House said members of the school's staff and faculty and any JPD officers who wish to participate will join together tomorrow afternoon, for a brief gathering in Corporal Thompson's honor.

Meanwhile, flags have been lowered to half-staff at the Jonesboro Justice Complex and City Hall, in memorium to Thompson.   Her death comes almost one year to the date after the passing of Officer Scott Akers, the last active JPD officer to die.  Akers died of cancer on June 18, 2004.

Thompson was 44.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced later by Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
