Paragould cemetery working for historic status

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - A nearly 160-year-old cemetery in Greene County is in need of repair and residents there are working to get the cemetery some much-needed help.

Paragould Deputy City Clerk Julia Davis said work is underway to get Linwood Cemetery listed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. If the cemetery is placed on the register, which is run by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, it will be eligible for a $9,000 grant to fix the Mausoleum.

Davis said the cemetery, in the center of Paragould, has seen a lot of wear and tear, as well as vandalism.

"We're trying to get a grant to fix it up because of age and theft, and things like that have taken its toll on there. We've had things stolen from it, windows broken out, and the marble is wearing away. So it needs some work done. Some TLC," Davis said.

Officials should know by summer if the cemetery is approved for the register.
