JONESBORO, Ark. (3/15/17) – The Arkansas State baseball team allowed Southern Illinois to score three runs in the third inning and couldn’t generate enough offense to come back in a 4-2 loss Wednesday at Tomlinson Stadium.
Jeremy Brown began the scoring with his third home run of the season by hitting a solo shot off SIU (9-7) starter Austin McPheron in the bottom of the first, but A-State (9-7) starter Collin Cahill allowed three runs in the top of the third inning to allow the Salukis to take a 3-1 edge. Southern Illinois had two hits in the inning with a RBI double by Greg Lambert and run-scoring single by Jake Hand on a check swing along with a sacrifice fly. Cahill hit two batters and walked one in the frame.
The Red Wolves were able to get within 3-2 after three straight two-out singles in the bottom of the fifth inning by Jake Bakamus, Brown, and Joe Schrimpf with Schrimpf’s plating Bakamus. Justin Felix walked to load the bases, but Garrett Rucker struck out swinging to end the threat. However, the Salukis added another run after a RBI single by Dyllin Mucha, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the fourth inning, to go in front 4-2.
A-State had lead-off runners in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but couldn’t push across another run. The team had two runners on with one out in the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Schrimpf ended the threat.
Ryan Netermeyer entered to close the game for SIU and walked Bakamus with two outs, but was able to get Brown to fly out to center field to end the game. It was Netermeyer’s fifth save of the year and McPheron earned the win for SIU after entering the game on a predetermined pitch count. Cahill fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss, while A-State’s bullpen of Tanner Kirby, Tyler Mitzel, Zachary Patterson, and Tyler Zuber held Southern Illinois to one run on four hits with six punch outs.
The loss for the Red Wolves snapped a six-game winning streak against SIU for the team. A-State’s next game will be Friday night at 6:30 p.m. when the squad opens Sun Belt Conference play against ULM at Tomlinson Stadium.
