MONETTE, AR (KAIT) -

A Region 8 school district won big at EAST Conference in Hot Springs.

Buffalo Island Central’s EAST group walked away with the 2017 Timothy R. Stephenson Founder’s Award Wednesday night at a special awards gala.

The award is the highest single achievement in EAST.

According to the EAST Initiative, the Founder’s Award honors programs that motivate students to pursue their own interests while learning to master technical skills in coding, software development, multimedia production, and data visualization.

The award is based on an application students submit highlighting projects they’ve completed.

Region 8 News covered two of those projects including the creation of a 3D crutch for a doll to match its owner and creating a 3D hand for a BIC teacher who was born without one.

Armorel High School was also a finalist with BIC for the Founder’s Award.

In a news release from EAST Initiative, it states five schools are chosen as finalists from 236 schools with EAST programs in five states.

BIC students also won the conference's 3D Print It Up competition for their 3D doll crutch project.
