JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A local church that has been part of Jonesboro's history since the 1880s made more history Sunday.
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Church Street broke ground on their new church on Highland Drive. Louis Schaaf, who serves on the church's building committee, told Region 8 News that 20 acres of land were purchased on Highland Drive in the late 1980s with a plan to make the land the home for each of their facilities.
The church's school, which was on Church Street for many years, has already moved to the property.
Officials at St. Bernards, who bought the property on Church Street, have said the church will be moving as well.
"We'll actually close the church Oct. 1 and we have to raze the church by December of this year. We hope to be in our new church sometime in the third or fourth quarter of 2018," Schaaf said.
When the church leaves the Church Street location, the church will use the St. Bernards Auditorium for church services in the interim.
