JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A simple seat belt violation led Jonesboro police to discover drugs and a gun that was stolen in a recent burglary at a Jonesboro pawn shop.
Kobe J. Smith, Darryle Smith, Antonio Funches and a 16-year-old juvenile were charged with several crimes including simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms and theft by receiving.
Court documents say the four suspects were pulled over early Monday morning because a passenger in the front seat was not wearing a seat belt. After stopping the vehicle, the officer said he smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the car.
While searching the vehicle, the officers found three small baggies of marijuana and a Hi-Point 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Court documents say the gun had five rounds in it including one in the chamber. When officers ran the serial number on the handgun, it came back as a weapon that was stolen from Turtle Creek Pawn in February.
The possession of the stolen gun resulted in a charge of theft by receiving for all four suspects.
Kobe J. Smith, Darryle Smith and Antonio Funches will be in court on April 20. The 16-year-old's case will be handled in juvenile court.
