City bans feeding of stray animals

CORNING, AR (KAIT) - The city of Corning created an ordinance banning the feeding of stray animals.

According to city council member Terry Masterson, the ordinance was created to keep people from feeding animals on private property.

He said they had a problem in town with people feeding the animals on restaurant and business property.

One woman who has been feeding stray cats for 21 years said the ordinance came as a shock to her.

"We didn't even know about it until it had already been passed, " said Patricia Hawkins.

Anyone caught feeding the animals after April 10 will be fined $90.

Hawkins said she is very concerned about the animals she has been feeding.

"It makes me sick, " she said. "I've been doing it so long. I'm really going to miss feeding them."

Hawkins said a petition has been started to get the ordinance repealed.
