A-State Baseball Drops Series Opener to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. (3/24/17) – The Arkansas State baseball team's offense couldn't solve Coastal Carolina starter Alex Cunningham as the Red Wolves only managed one hit in a 5-0 loss to the Chanticleers in the series opener Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.

Cunningham threw the first complete game shutout of his career as he limited A-State (11-10, 2-2 SBC) to three baserunners with two coming via walk and the other on a hit. He struck out 10 in the outing to earn the victory for the Chanticleers (13-9, 2-2 SBC).

A-State starter Bryan Ayers matched Cunningham as the Vilonia, Ark., native was able to shut the Chanticleers (13-9, 2-2 SBC) out for 6.2 innings, but Matt Beaird homered to right field on a 2-0 pitch to score himself and Dalton Ewing, who singled with one out, to put Coastal Carolina on the scoreboard. Peyton Isaacson doubled later in the inning to drive in two more runs and put the home team in front 4-0.

Ayers' final line was 6.2 innings with four runs allowed (all earned) on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Tanner Kirby entered the game to get the final out of the seventh inning before Brandon Stuckenschneider gave up an unearned run in the eighth to set the final at 5-0.

A senior right-hander, Cunningham tossed 6.1 perfect innings before walking Joe Schrimpf in the seventh. The Red Wolves were able to break up the no hitter with one out in the seventh inning when Tobias Johnson hit an infield single and A-State puts runners on second and third with two outs after a double steal by Jake Bakamus and Johnson, but Drew Tipton flew out to left field to end the threat.

The Red Wolves and Coastal Carolina continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT) with Peyton Culbertson slated to square off against Andrew Beckwith.
