Woman cited after leaving kids in car

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police cited a woman after she left five kids in a car while she shopped.

Just after 4 p.m. Sunday, Officer Casey Moore responded to a call of a child left in an SUV on the parking lot of Walmart, 1815 E. Highland.

The caller said they saw a black Ford Freestyle parked next to their vehicle with the door open. When they went to shut the door, they realized there were five small children inside, the initial incident report stated.

Moore noted the vehicle was turned off and the driver's door was open 3-4 inches. All of the windows were rolled up. He stated in the report that the temperature was approximately 70 degrees.

When he looked inside, he saw the keys in the ignition. He also found an 11-year-old boy holding a two-month-old child. Moore also saw three more children, all under the age of five, sitting in the back seat.

Moore called for a Department of Children and Family Services agent, then waited for the driver to return to the vehicle.

About 15-20 minutes after arriving at the scene, Moore said 41-year-old Shirline Morgan came out to the SUV.

Moore cited her with third-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and released her with an April 3 court date.

The DCFS agent arrived and said she would conduct an investigation of the incident.
