NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Mark Hindsley, athletic director and head football coach at Newport High School, was selected as our March Teacher of the Month.
Hindsley, a Marvell native and University of Arkansas graduate, has taught in the Newport School District for ten years.
He began his career as a junior high coach, then advanced to coaching at the high school level before becoming the athletic director.
"Coming from a farming community, I've always loved sports," Hindsley said. "They always talked about needing to have a career you want to go to everyday and sports was a part of my life every day. I knew I could be a part of young people's lives and do it through coaching."
It was not one of his players, however, who nominated him but a female student who serves as the football team's manager. She said Hindsley has taken her under his wing and given her lots of confidence.
"It says manager on the roster, but she is as much a part of this team as any boy," Hindsley said. "It makes me feel good because, hopefully, we're doing something right and I'm glad she feels like part of the team."
Hindsley takes the same approach with the rest of the team and tries to prepare them for life after high school.
"Athletics are a vessel for growth," Hindsley said. "If we can do something to transfer a little bit of that maturity and the good characteristics that they can take after they graduate whether it be college or a trade, whatever they do, it's growth and being able to be a man."
