POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - The city of Pocahontas will soon have a new addition to their Old Frisco Train Depot.
The building has been home to a visitor information center for several years and now they are in the process of adding a museum.
According to Tourism Director Bill Carroll, the depot was built in 1920 and abandoned in the 1970's.
"The city wanted to preserve it," said Carroll. "Our transportation history here is outstanding, very significant."
Carroll said the city has appropriated some money to add a transportation museum to the depot.
"Pocahontas was the number one river port in the state from 1840 to 1851," he said. "Even after the Civil War, it was a very important steamboat town, very exciting era here."
Carroll said among the featured exhibits will be things related to the Old Rock and Roll Highway and a local airport used for training during World War II.
"We also have a railroad history here and we hope to show all those things," said Carroll.
Carroll said work has already begun on the museum, but he is unsure when it will be completed.
