Police: Eight year old bitten in face by dog, surgery required

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An 8-year-old child recently underwent surgery to her face after being bitten by a dog, Jonesboro police said Monday.

Angelica T. Gibson of Jonesboro was cited for having a vicious dog in connection with a March 28 incident on West Cherry Street. According to a police report, Officer Kenny Pigue went to the emergency room at St. Bernards to talk to the child's parents and a witness.

The child's father told police that he and his daughter were in the street talking with friends, when they noticed Gibson was walking her German Shepherd dog on a leash, police said.

The father asked Gibson if his daughter could pet the dog.

"Victim pet the dog for a few minutes. All at once, the girl screamed and the dog had bit her on the side of the face," the father told police.

Gibson told police that the child did ask to pet the dog. Gibson said the dog was up to date on his rabies vaccination and showed Pigue a copy of the vaccination papers.

Gibson also told police that the dog lives inside her house, sleeps with her children and has never bitten anyone before, police said.

The dog has been quarantined by city animal control officers until April 5.

Gibson is scheduled to appear in district court for the misdemeanor on April 5.
