Students to turn lot into community garden

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - With the help of a grant, students at one school are making a place they can grow in the knowledge of agriculture, literally.

The Newport School District FFA program accepted a $1,300 grant Thursday to start transforming a city lot into a student-run community garden.

Tractor Supply Company and the FFA awarded the group the grant through Grants for Growing project.

The purpose is to give FFA students a hands-on environment to build, manage, and sustain a garden while also educating the community about how to produce their own fresh vegetables.

A construction date has not yet been set, according to the Newport's FFA advisor Lucas Anderson.

Newport's FFA program was one of nine chapters in Arkansas to receive a grant from Grants for Growing in 2017.
