WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) - A project this spring may keep some Lawrence County families warm this fall and winter.
Crews have been cutting down trees at Stewart Park in Walnut Ridge, with the free firewood available for Lawrence County residents.
Walnut Ridge officials are asking for volunteers to help remove the wood on the ground and cut it into sizes for firewood. However, volunteers have to go to City Hall and fill out a worksheet before taking any of the wood away.
If not, the person will pay a fine.
The park will also soon have some new playground equipment installed as work continued this week.
The park has not had new equipment installed since 1996.
The city applied for the grant in April 2016 and soon they will order the ground cover and shade area for the new playground.
"The shade is what we are really excited about," said Mechelle Davis, Park Committee chairwoman. "The equipment gets so hot in the summer and it prohibits them from the full extent of the use of the park."
Unhealthy trees were cut down last week, while crews are working on a project to help overflow parking at the north end of the park's main ballfield. Also, crews spent Monday pumping out the pool at the park.
Davis said there are also plans to move some current equipment.
"There's one large existing structure that will just have to be moved over a little bit to allow us to add the new structure," she said.
Davis said she thinks the new equipment will bring more visitors to the park.
"We believe that adding shade, adding improved playground equipment, more playground equipment, it just offers more," she said.
