BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) - Both Brookland and Manila firefighters had the opportunity Thursday to learn about hazardous materials as well as decontamination and dangerous situations.
The Brookland Fire Department and the Manila Fire Department went through a 16-hour course sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Officials said the course helped train firefighters about awareness of dangerous chemicals.
Brookland Fire Chief Steve Beck said the training is something that firefighters work with at least every five years, with real life scenarios.
"You never know when we are going to have a chemical spill. With the major highway and major railroad, you never know when it is going to happen luckily this doesn't happen very often but we're just trying to be ready when it does happen," Beck said.
The firefighters will end their training next Thursday at a testing site.
