JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Professional disc golf players from around the world gathered in Jonesboro for the city's first professional disc golf tournament.
The Jonesboro Open kicked off Thursday morning at Disc Side of Heaven as the competitors took on the course for cash prizes and a chance to advance to other tournaments in the 2017 Disc Golf Pro Tour.
"Jonesboro is a relatively under-served community when it comes to disc golf. It's really nice to be able to bring a disc golf pro tour here," said Steve Dodge, Disc Golf Pro Tour director. "Jonesboro offers a significant and unique challenge to these players. It has incredible distance, amazing elevation and the trees here are crazy. Hundred-foot-wide canopies are not something we normally throw around and it's going to offer a unique challenge to these players."
Des Reading, an Iowa native and 4-time world champion, was among the competitors. She was excited to tackle the challenges.
"I've played in Arkansas before and it's just a beautiful state," Reading said. "I know your slogan is the Natural State and I think this golf course will attest to that. It's very long, it's one of the longer courses we'll play on the tour stop but the hills and undulation, and the water shots, it's a really, lovely challenging course to play."
The Jonesboro Open wraps up on April 16.
