JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Region 8 senior citizens batted up Thursday hoping to win big.

The East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging sponsored the 2017 Regional Bean Bag Baseball Tournament.

Eight teams competed at the St. Bernards Auditorium.

Alexa Gann, a lifestyle specialist for the EAAAA, said every team takes it very seriously.

“It’s a big deal for these people,” Gann said. “They come, they want that trophy. They want that number one spot.”

Teams from Bono, Harrisburg, Jonesboro, Lepanto, Paragould, Rector, Weiner, and West Memphis competed for the top four spots.

The top teams get to compete in the state tournament in Jacksonville in May.

Cheers could be heard across the auditorium as players rooted for each other.

“I think it’s something they look forward to,” Gann said. “You know, all these people are mostly retired. Their kids are raised, grandkids are in school this time of year and this is fun, something for them to do.”

While it’s fun and competitive, Gann said it’s also good for their health.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it,” Gann said. “It is a really big thing, and these people are getting out and being active which is very important.”
