JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Several Northeast Arkansas sheriffs met Thursday to discuss the possibility of adding a mental health facility to the area.

The departments met with area hospitals, Mid-South Health Systems, and attorneys.

The departments are asking that one of three facilities set to be built in the state be added in Northeast Arkansas.

"Bottom line is there's such a large need for the services," said Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd.  "In our jails, it doesn't matter what county in Arkansas you are, we see the same problem."

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller says inmates in need of mental healthcare can cost the jail time and money.

"Having a facility of this nature in our area will cut down on man hour times traveling to and from the facilities," said Miller.

According to Boyd, the meeting was a step in the right direction.

"We feel like we're going to be able to really see our work come together and something established," said Boyd.
