JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A new piece of artwork honors people who have battled breast cancer as well as the people supporting an event next month in Jonesboro.

Jonesboro artist Sara Howell unveiled the artwork Thursday during an event in support of the 2017 NEA Komen Race for the Cure. The May 6 event is the first one ever in Northeast Arkansas and will be held at Centennial Bank Stadium on the A-State campus.

Howell, who lost her mother to breast cancer, said she worked on the project in phases, spending time learning about the project, the reason for it and its goals.

A committee has met to go over plans for the event. So far, 35 teams have registered for the event. A pre-race pasta party will happen from 6 - 8 p.m. on the night before the race on May 6. The event plans activities for children and men and will include a pep rally for the run.

Anyone interested in learning about the event or participating can go to the website.
