POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - Residents in Pocahontas are gearing up for their annual Founder's Day celebration.
The event will be on May 5th and this year there are some new additions to the festivities.
The city will kick-off the event by honoring All-American football player Wear Schoonover.
Schoonover was a native of Pocahontas and played football for the University of Arkansas.
"He lettered in four sports, baseball, basketball and football," said Linda Bowlin, vice president of Five Rivers Historical Preservation Inc. "He was also the first All-American football player in the Southwest Conference."
Bowlin says Schoonover also dedicated his life to practicing law in Washington, D.C.
"He's a very significant sports figure throughout the entire state and he happened to have been born and raised here in Pocahontas," she said.
The city will dedicate a historical marker in his honor at City Hall on May 5 at 1 p.m.
The city has also been preparing the town for more visitors during the event.
"City Hall is spiffing up. They're painting," she said. "The museum will have an exhibit about Wear Schoonover down in the lobby."
There will also be other additions to Founder's Day including live performances during the town's haunted tour.
