HOXIE, AR (KAIT) -

Lisa Vankirk, a second-grade teacher at Hoxie Elementary School, was selected as our April Teacher of the Month.

Vankirk has been teaching at the school for 8 years. Previously, she taught in Swifton.

She always knew she wanted to be a teacher and said her family inspired her.

“When my children first started school, I was that momma that got to stay home,” Vankirk said. “I couldn’t understand when Jonathan (Vankirk’s son) started school, he could already read and the other kids couldn’t. I couldn’t figure out why their parents didn’t help them. I realized then not all mommas get to stay home. Mommas have to work too. I was lucky.”

She got her first taste of the education field when she began volunteering at her daughter's Head Start program.

Vankirk said the time she spends with her students each year keeps her coming back.

“Seeing the kids when something really clicks with them,” Vankirk said. “Just to see them learn and that bright light and smile when they figure it out.”

Even after they leave her classroom, Vankirk said she hopes they know that they’re loved and that she cares about them.

“I want them to have a good experience here,” Vankirk said. “So, that when they move on, they can look back and say when I was in second grade my teacher said I can do this, I can do anything.”

Vankirk’s students have impacted her life as much as she has theirs.

“It’s made me look at things a whole lot different,” Vankirk said. “They have helped me learn that it’s okay as long as you give your best and that’s all anybody can ask of you.
