Poplar Bluff police warn of postal scam

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) - Authorities in southeast Missouri are asking people to be careful, especially if they see something from the United States Postal Service on their computer.

According to a post on the Poplar Bluff Police Department Facebook page, the department has received complaints about emails that are pretending to be the USPS.

The department quotes the Better Business Bureau, saying the email looks like a shipping notification and that the USPS is unable to deliver a package. The email also asks people to download a confirmation form and take to a post office.

However, by downloading the receipt, people are actually downloading a virus that allows a computer hacker to get banking and personal information.

Authorities also ask people to be careful and to report any suspicious activity to police.
