JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Kids have a chance to cast a line for free in Jonesboro.

Children ages 6 to 15 are invited to the Optimist Fishing Derby on May 6, 2017, at Craighead Forest Park from 9 a.m. until noon.

Barry Clayton, Jonesboro Optimist Club, joined Diana Davis on Region 8 News Midday Thursday to discuss the event.

“They will be able to fish, bring their parents, their grandparents, and be able to fish and enjoy the day,” Clayton said.

Prizes are a big part of the fishing derby.

“The prizes will consist of biggest fish, most pounds, and also how many fish you get,” Clayton said.

The Jonesboro Optimist Club does encourage children to bring their own fishing poles, but Clayton said children who don’t have one will be provided with one.

Clayton said they focus their fundraising and events on children because it’s a joy to see them learn and have fun.

Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 6.
