'Birds Break Out the Bats in 9-1 Win

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Memphis Redbirds cranked out a season-high 17 hits, with a season-best eight going for extra-bases, in a 9-1 victory over the Round Rock Express (Rangers) Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Daniel Poncedeleon was stellar on the mound for the Redbirds (11-11) in his second quality start in a row, working 6.0 innings and giving up one run on five hits. He was helped by a trio of three-hit games from Todd CunninghamLuke Voit, and Paul DeJong, with Voit and Cunningham combining to drive in seven of Memphis’ nine runs.

Voit hit two home runs in the contest, and Carson Kelly added another for the Redbirds. Along with the three three-hit games, Kelly, Wilfredo Tovar, and Breyvic Valera each had a pair of knocks on the night.

Poncedeleon has given up just one earned run in each of his four Triple-A starts. He has pitched a total of 22.0 innings, given up 14 hits, and struck out 20 opposing hitters on the season.

So far this series Memphis has 29 hits, 14 of which have been extra-base drives.

Voit and Kelly hit back-to-back bombs in the bottom of the first, which marked the second-straight game the Redbirds have hit back-to-back homers, after DeJong and Patrick Wisdom did the same in the second inning of last night’s contest.

After Poncedeleon’s solid outing, Mark Montgomery and Sam Tuivailala combined to throw 3.0 scoreless innings to seal the win.
