EMORY, TX (KLTV) -

A whole subdivision just south of Emory was hammered by strong winds that flattened trees and crushed some homes.

A shelter has been set up for storm victims there in the 700 block of North Texas Street.

In seconds, a residential section of Emory along Highway 69 winds turned some country homes into kindling.

"Got a call from my brother who said there was a storm coming this way. I just got off the phone with him and that's when I see the trees lay down
right in front of me, it was on top of us just that quick," said homeowner Don Sims.

Emergency crews were standing ready, watching what was happening in Canton.

"We received reports of storms and damages about an hour, hour and a half before. We had already been mobilized up, we had spotters out, deputies,
fire department ready," says Rains County Emergency Management Coordinator Jon Wedeking.

Over 20 homes had trees crash down on them or were mangled by high winds.

"I was very shocked, you see damage like this on the news. You have no idea until you see it for yourself, it's absolutely devastating," said neighbor
Aleshia Joslin.

One person was injured and transported to a hospital, several others treated at a local triage.

"We set up a walking wounded triage center at the Emory fire station," Wedeking says.

Emory city records show that a home had not been damaged by a tornado in 100 years. "They usually go around us, but this time it was our turn," says Wedeking. "I mean this place is demolished," Sims says.

The effort now is a community effort to rebuild and support each other.

"This is my home, this is where I grew up. These people are family," Wedeking says.

Help for those who have lost their homes is being directed to the Rains County Good Samaritan’s Organization.
