$46 Million Development Coming To Jonesboro

JULY 6, 2005-- Posted at 12:00 PM CDT

Jonesboro, AR -It's a deal three years in the making. Hotel mogul John Q. Hammons, who has 61 hotel properties in 22 states, will put his 62nd in Jonesboro.

The nine story Marriott Courtyard is only half the project. A 65,000 square foot convention center will be the showcase in the 46 million dollar project. An expense that won't be Hammon's alone. The city of Jonesboro will have to pay three-quarters of the expense of the convention center. That translates into 10.5 million dollars.

The site on Race Street is actually Hammon's second choice. Three years ago he wanted the hotel and convention center to be part of the Southern Hills Mall. That mall didn't happen. But Bruce Burrow's Mall at Turtle Creek did so Hammons snatched up the 14 acres just two blocks away.

Now, Hammons will build it. The question is, will they come?
