Homeland Security: Extra Vigilance Requested, But No Rise in Threat Level

JULY 7, 2005 - Posted at 7:45 a.m. CDT

WASHINGTON - Authorities in major U.S. cities have been asked to step up their vigilance on transit systems after today's series of explosions in London.

A Homeland Security Department spokesman says, though, that there are no immediate plans to raise the nation's threat level.

In Los Angeles, police have activated a special command center.  In the nation's capital, bomb-sniffing dogs and police armed with machine guns are patrolling subways and buses looking for anything suspicious.  In Chicago, announcements are being made to transit riders to alert transit workers of any suspicious packages.
