HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

We're looking at a flood situation. That's the word from Harrison County's emergency manager as tropical weather heads our way.

A Gulfport public works crew spent part of Monday morning cleaning debris from a drainage canal off Dedeaux Road. With heavy rain expected, keeping that water flowing through Flat Branch Creek could prevent it from flooding homes and businesses.

Harrison County's road department is ready. High water barricades are standing by and self-serve sand piles are already in place.

"From Harrison County's perspective, we're looking at a flood situation," said Harrison County Emergency Manager Rupert Lacy.

Lacy is keeping close tabs on the approaching system. He said with the ground already fairly saturated from recent rainfall, and with a high tide cycle this week, the flooding could be even worse than expected.

"Right now, we're looking at a flood event. We've been leaning toward that. Like I said, it is really going to depend on how much rain we see. You know, another round of could be heavy duty rain is coming our way," he said.

The county already has self-serve sand piles with sand bags at the road department on Lorraine Cowan Road, along with various other work centers.

Harrison County locations:

  • Lorraine Rd. Work Center - Hwy. 605 in Gulfport
  • Woolmarket Work Center - Hwy. 67
  • D'Iberville Work Center - 1st Ave./Rodriguez St.
  • North Gulfport Work Center
  • Lyman Work Center - County Farm Rd. in Gulfport
  • Long Beach Work Center - Seal Ave.
  • Long Beach Harbor parking lot
  • Courthouse Rd. parking lot at Ken Combs Pier

City of Gulfport locations:

  • Gulfport Public Works Center - Hewes Ave.
  • Orange Grove Community Center - Dedeaux Rd.
  • Fire Station #2 - 42nd Ave.

City of Biloxi locations:

  • Cavalier Park - Lawrence St.
  • Biloxi Soccer Fields/Dog Park - Popp's Ferry Rd.
  • Fire Station #8 - Woolmarket Rd.

Boaters are keeping one eye on the weather and taking advantage of Monday's sunshine, doubling their lines and securing their vessels against possible high winds and rising waters.

"A few extra lines. I don't think it's going to be that serious," said boat owner Terry Winchester, as he tied off his boat at the Gulfport Harbor. "If you don't have it tied up secure, it could beat against the dock. That's about the main thing. Beat against the dock, come loose, float around and hit other boats."

It's best to be safe, says the owner of a 55-foot Chris Craft. Harley Hoy had been anchored at Ship Island, ut cut that visit short with the pending weather.

"Need to make sure you have the right amount of slack in the lines. A line is made for it to stretch, but sometimes they break. They have weak spots. So, when you get good weather like this, just be safe. Put a second line on there," said Hoy.

Taking the necessary precautions, while keeping a close watch on the approaching weather.
